The geometries of nature, in ILJA’s SS 2014 collection
For the latest SS 2014 collection of the brand ILJA (the haute-couture line of Ilja Visser), the Dutch fashion designer is inspired by the Japanese art of Ikebana, the "way of flowers", which connects man and surrounding environment with sophisticated ideals of beauty. In contrast with the decorative way of arranging flowers in Western countries, Ikebana, like many Zen philosophies, strives to reach an accurate balance through construction, rhythm and color.
And Ilja’s SS 2014 collection is just as maniacal in the design of the garments, where shapes are inspired by nature and traditional silhouettes of female fashion find an unexpected synthesis.
Tunics and robes that slim the figure meet sharp geometric cuts. Many pieces are contaminated by inserts that recall floral forms and yet reference science fiction at the same time.
All in a chromatic palette based on black and white, enlivened by moments of intense yellow and communicated through a photo shoot in which ever-present shadows underline the harmony between what is natural and artificial in Ikebana.
